Bernard "Bernie" L. Orfe, Sr. of Riverside, NJ passed away on October 20, 2022, at Complete Care at Kresson View in Voorhees, NJ. He was 95.
The youngest of four children, Bernie was born on August 10, 1927 to the late George H. Orfe, Jr. and Ada B. (Duncan) Orfe at Weeks Hospital in Riverside, NJ. He attended St. Peter's School in Riverside and graduated from Riverside High School, after which he enlisted in the Navy and served aboard the U.S.S. North Carolina during World War II.
Bernie married his beloved wife, Frances M. (LeCates) Orfe of Palmyra (deceased), on September 7, 1948. Bernie and Frances had three children: Susan Barnett (Robert), Bernard L. Orfe, Jr. (deceased), and Nancy Orfe (Phillip Paulucci, Jr.); four grandchildren: Sandra, Barbara, Stephanie, and Christopher (deceased); five great-grandchildren: Justin, Derrick, Shawn, Aubrey, and Cassie; one great-great-grandchild: Jackson; and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to owning and operating his own plumbing business from 1962 until his retirement in 1987, Bernie was a plumbing inspector for both Riverside and Lumberton and served on the Riverside Sewerage Authority. He was also a dedicated member of the Riverside Fire Co. No. 1. During his sixty-six years of service, his many roles included chief, treasurer (for thirty years), fire commissioner, president of the Riverside Exempt Firemen's Association, and captain of the Riverside Emergency Squad.
Bernie will be remembered for his sense of humor and his love of golf, card games, woodworking, and Friday Manhattans. He also enjoyed working the ox roast, bingo, and grilling hot dogs and hamburgers for the fire company at car shows.
Relatives and friends are invited to his viewing on Wednesday evening, October 26, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Weber Funeral Home, 112 Broad Street, Riverton, NJ, and on Thursday morning, October 27, from 9:45 to 10:45 a.m. at Sacred Heart Church, 4th and Linden Ave., Riverton, NJ. Afterwards, a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. at the church. Interment will follow at St. Peter's Cemetery, Riverside.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Riverside Fire Co. No. 1, PO Box 1, Riverside, NJ. Condolences may be sent to the family at www.weberfuneralhomeinc.com.
