Catherine M.
Monahan
Jan 12, 1941 — Aug 3, 2025
Catherine Marie Monahan—Cass, Cassie, Kate, Mom-Mom, or Mom to those who loved her—passed on August 3, 2025. She was 84 and a longtime resident of Palmyra, NJ.
The eldest of six children, Cassie grew up in North Philadelphia's Swampoodle neighborhood and attended Corpus Christi Parish School and Hallahan Catholic Girls' High School, where she excelled in English, science, and Spanish (but not choir). She spent nearly every childhood summer down the shore in Wildwood Crest, NJ with her sisters Mary Grace, Theresa, Sue, and Madeleine, brother Joe, and parents Maryanne and Joe Walsh. Cassie adored Elvis and loved dancing with friends at the St. Joe's Boys' Orphanage dances each Sunday night. Immediately after graduating high school, she enrolled at St. Joseph's University and began teaching; first at a Philadelphia parish school and later at a NJ public school.
Legend says Cassie met Jack when he pulled his sports car up the curb and offered her a ride. She promptly insulted him. Courtship and marriage ensued, as well as a motorcycle, speedboat, convertible, historic S. Jersey home, big yard, many dogs, three children, and six grandchildren. Cassie embraced a new life in NJ and made a home for her family. She taught herself to cook, learned to drive, gardened, sewed, and decorated. She learned the names of the birds, trees, and flowers and taught them to her children. Dinners were homemade, school lunches packed, papers proofread, and grammar corrected. She scheduled, guided, and oversaw. Throughout 30 years of childrearing, Jack's 12 years of night school, illness, joy, and crisis, she was her family's heart and constant defender. The fast vehicles were short-lived, but the marriage had staying power. Cassie and Jack would have celebrated their 62nd anniversary next month, on September 7.
Cassie is survived by her beloved husband, John C. Monahan, and their children, Catherine Monahan and husband Chris Dufton of Nederland, CO, John Monahan and wife Toni Nagy of Broomfield, CO, and Matthew Monahan and wife Carly of Haddon Twp., NJ. She is also survived by her grandchildren Stella, Maeve, and Henry Dufton of Nederland, CO, Aedan Monahan of Broomfield, CO, and Samantha and Nora Monahan of Haddon Twp., NJ.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend her viewing on Friday, August 8, 2025 from 9:00 AM to 11:00 AM, followed by her funeral service at 11:00 AM at the Weber Funeral Home, 112 Broad Street, Riverton, NJ 08077. Burial will follow at 1:30 PM at the BGWCD New Jersey Veterans Cemetery, Hightstown, NJ.
In lieu of flowers or other expressions of sympathy, donations to the Pinelands Preservation Alliance (609-859-8860) at https://pinelandsalliance.org/our-work/support-ppa/ would be preferred.
