Denise Z.
Chatfield
Feb 7, 1937 — Dec 7, 2023
In the tender embrace of her family, Denise Zadeik Chatfield, a woman whose life was a beautiful composition of music, humor, love and purpose, peacefully departed this world at the age of 86 on December 7, 2023, in Riverton, New Jersey. Raised in the Bronx, New York, Denise's lifelong career in music began with the study of piano at age five. As a teenager, she attended New York's prestigious The High School of Music & Art (now LaGuardia Arts) to study conducting and flute. In 1957, Denise graduated with a BA in Music Theory and Composition from Chatham University in Pittsburgh, PA, where she also studied organ and choral directing. She did her graduate work at Rutgers University in New Jersey.
Married in 1957 to the late E. Hale Chatfield, a Professor of English and Poet in Residence at Hiram College, Denise and Hale embarked on a lifelong journey that blended the academic with the artistic. Together, they nurtured not only their family of four children but also the great many students who were fortunate enough to study with them.
For over 40 years, Denise had a private studio dedicated to teaching piano and organ students across Northeast Ohio. She was a member of the American Guild of Organists and the Piano Teachers of the Western Reserve, and she participated in Master Classes for duo piano. Denise performed, with her good friend and partner Marcia Wellman, piano duets throughout the Greater Cleveland area.
Denise's legacy extends well beyond the walls of her private studio. Denise also had a lifelong career in the ministry of music, serving in the dual roles of organist and choir director for four different Church communities, beginning in1963 in Baltimore, Maryland, and culminating in a 28 year tenure as the Director of Music at Christ Church Episcopal in Hudson, Ohio.
During her tenure at Christ Church, Denise received a Certificate in Theological Studies from the Education for Ministry (EFM) after which she became an EFM program facilitator. This was one of her proudest accomplishments. In 1999, Denise was awarded a Continuing Education Grant from the Episcopal Diocese of Ohio so that she could participate in a pilgrimage to the religious community at Taize, France. This spiritual and uplifting experience had a profound and lasting effect on her.
Denise retired to Davenport, Florida, in 2005, where she continued to serve her community. She volunteered for organizations supporting literacy for adults and hospice care and traveled throughout Florida to judge and coach aspiring pianists as part of the National Guild of Piano Teachers. While in Florida, she attended St. Paul's Episcopal in Winter Haven, where she was an active member of The Order of the Daughters of the King.
Denise was predeceased by her parents, Peter Alexander and Alice Zadeik, her husband, Eugene Hale Chatfield, and her brother, Peter Alexander Zadeik, Jr. She is survived by her four children, Stephen Hale Chatfield (Gail) from Bradenton, FL, Jennifer Chatfield Bailey (Richard) from Delran, NJ, Peter Wilson Chatfield (Sallie) from Chevy Chase, MD, and Alexander Eugene Chatfield from Davenport, FL, seven grandchildren, six step-grandchildren, eighteen great-grandchildren (with four more expected in 2024), four nieces, 2 nephews, and her beloved and closest first cousin, Carol Jeanne Stoltz (Seymour Friedland), as well as many cousins living in her parents' native Latvia.
A memorial service will be held in her honor at Christ Church, Hudson, Ohio, on April 6, 2024 at 11 AM. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations to her high school alma mater, Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School of Music & Art and Performing Arts (alumniandfriends.org), or to Joseph's House (josephshouse.org) are requested.
