Edward
Devine
Jul 22, 1955 — Jul 24, 2020
Edward Devine of Moorestown, age 65, passed away on July 24, 2020. He is survived by his wife, Haidee, of Moorestown and his two daughters, Katie Schaut (husband Tom) of Marlton, and Rosemary Devine Fluehr (husband AJ) of Conshohocken. Edward is also survived by four grandchildren, Brian, Lucas, Adam, and Isabella.
Ed was born in Darby, PA on July 22, 1955 to Charles and Mauria Devine. He grew up as one of seven siblings in Palmyra, New Jersey. Ed met his wife Haidee in 1977, when she waited on him at Kaminski's in Cherry Hill and the two bonded over their shared fluency in German. They were married in September of 1980.
Ed received his Bachelor of Arts in English from Temple University in 1980 and went on to earn his Juris Doctor from Rutgers Law School in 1985. As a young lawyer, Ed clerked for the honorable Sidney M. Aronovitz, a federal judge in Miami, FL, followed by two years with Schnader Harrison Segal & Lewis LLP in Philadelphia, PA. Ed found his professional calling as a Deputy Attorney General for the State of New Jersey, Department of Law and Public Safety, where he applied his commitment to environmental protection for 25 years. He held dual citizenship in both the United States and Ireland and did extensive pro bono legal work in Northern Ireland during The Troubles, where he assisted the wrongfully imprisoned. He was a defender of the disenfranchised in both his professional and personal life and regularly donated time and resources toward causes of environmentalism, anti-poverty, and civil and human rights.
Ed is fondly remembered as a brilliant, yet down-to-earth family man who enjoyed a good beer and lively conversation, always ready with an irreverent joke or witty retort. His many passions included literature, particularly Shakespeare, theatre, film, poetry, history, politics, the outdoors, and music (his favorites were Bob Dylan, Paul Simon, Joni Mitchell, traditional Irish and English folk, and the blues). He loved the ocean and marine biology, sailed as a young man, and owned salt-water fish tanks for most of his life. He was one of those guys who seemed to know everything about everything.
Ed was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and friend. He will be dearly missed.
Funeral services will be held at Weber Funeral Home, 112 Broad Street, Riverton, New Jersey 08077 on Sunday, August 9. Masks are required inside. Visitation will be from 11:00 AM–1:00 PM, followed by a memorial service at 1:00 PM, after which guests are welcome to enjoy refreshments and celebrate Ed's life at Haidee's home, 46 Claypoole Avenue, Moorestown, New Jersey 08057. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts can be made to Ed's longtime charity of choice, Doctors Without Borders: PO Box 5030, Hagerstown, MD 21741-5030 USA.
