Obituary

Edward John Hartmann, Age 98, former long-term resident and artist of Riverton, New Jersey, passed away Monday, February 26, 2024, in Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania.

Ed was born in Philadelphia on March 28, 1925.  Upon graduation from Northeast Public High School, he received a full scholarship to Philadelphia Museum School of Industrial Art (PMSIA).  After six months in art school, he was drafted into the Navy; trained at Radio School in Bedford Springs, PA; and was sent to Bucknell University as part of the Navy's V-12 officer training program, and after two years transferred to Harvard University earning a BS degree in War Service Science.  After being discharged in 1943, he completed art school, and then reenlisted in the Navy.  Commissioned as an Ensign, he was assigned as ships navigator on the USS Duel towards the end of the Korean conflict.  His ship sailed all over the world from Europe to the Mediterranean, Japan, Korea, Australia, and Hawaii.  After attaining the rank of Lieutenant, he honorably left the service in 1953.

It was at art school that he met his beloved wife, Joan Bailey of Palmyra, NJ.  They were married in 1951 at Calvary Presbyterian Church in Riverton, NJ.   He worked for 40 years as a commercial artist for several advertising firms in Philadelphia.  His life-long passion, however, was that of an artist, creating paintings in many different mediums.  His prolific work ranged from realistic landscapes, to modern figural abstracts.  He was particularly known in the Riverton area for painting in all kinds of weather.  He was honored as Grand Marshall for the Riverton's 4th of July parade in 2018.

Ed is survived by; his son John Hartmann (Carlisle, PA), having a successful career as a Paintings Conservator; grandson, Christopher Hartmann (Rochester, NY); step-grandsons William Winters (Carlisle, PA) and Timothy Winters (Mechanicsburg, PA); and nieces, Janet Coulter (Bridgton, ME) and Lois Kelberman (Annapolis, MD).  He was pre-deceased by Joan, his wife of 59 years; his sister, Margaret Coulter; and his parents, Anna Kunkel and Edward Hartmann.
