Florence Mary
Klein
Apr 23, 1930 — May 22, 2021
Forever in our hearts, Florence Mary Klein, of Palmyra, NJ, died peacefully in her sleep Saturday morning at the age of 91. She was proceeded in death by her beloved husband, Otto William Klein, her identical twin sister, Elizabeth (Betty) Shanahan, her brother, John McKinnon, her dear Aunt Margaret McDonald and parents, Bessie and Charles McKinnon.
She is survived by her five sons, Stephen, Thomas, William, Jeffrey and John, her daughter-in-laws, Pamela, Tracey, Alison, and Bonnie, her grandchildren, Billy, Ashley, Emily, Nathan, Jyun Yuan, Joshua, Michael and Zamannii, her sister-in-law, Virginia McKinnon and many nieces and nephews.
Florence had a full life and always found time to help others. Her servant's heart led her to a life of volunteering and social work where she became a Certified Social Worker at the age of 50 from Rutgers. She volunteered for the Emergency Management Team in Palmyra. She was honored by the Masons for the work she did with the highest award they give for service but, Florence never wanted recognition for what she did. She helped an untold number of people through her service, especially with The Red Cross, The Salvation Army, and her 24 years as Welfare Director for Palmyra and Welfare Director of Riverton, 30 years with the Knights of Columbus Ladies Auxiliary along with countless hours volunteering with Sacred Heart, St. Joseph's, Holy Cross and St. Joseph's Prep.
Florence was born in Manhattan, grew up in the Bronx and graduated from Cathedral High School. She regaled us with stories of her life in NYC, her vacations to City Island and travels throughout the U.S. and abroad. She especially enjoyed her trips to Ireland and Scotland to visit her relatives. She loved her Philadelphia teams, the Eagles and the Phillies. If the game was on, she was watching it.
She treasured her family and friends and the time she shared with them. There was a special place in her heart for the neighbors she counted as friends, the girls she went to lunch with and the friends she bowled with until she was 85. She enjoyed long walks down the river and like most Nanas she was most proud of her grandchildren and their accomplishments.
She loved her church and attended Mass weekly if not daily. But, most of all, she loved the Lord, who sustained her through difficult times. She saw the blessings in her life and we were blessed by knowing her. Florence was one of a kind, a truly kind person, who brought a smile and a bright light to the many lives she touched. She was simply a joy to be around.
Rejoice in heaven, Dear One, where all tears are wiped away. Rest well in the arms and mercy of your Savior, Jesus. We miss you dearly.
