Harry B.
Johnstone
Apr 29, 1941 — Sep 27, 2025
Harry Burns Johnstone, age 84, of Cinnaminson, NJ, passed away on September 27, 2025.
Born in 1941 to Katherine M. (née Burns) and Harry W. Johnstone at Zurbrugg Hospital in Riverside, NJ, Harry spent most of his life in the Riverside area. He graduated from Riverside High School, where he played on the 1959 state championship basketball team — a memory he was proud of for the rest of his life. He continued his basketball journey at Campbell College in North Carolina, earning a degree in education, and later went on to receive his master's from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
After college, Harry returned home to Riverside and began a 35-year teaching career at Riverside High School. He taught science, anatomy, and physiology — and for many students, he was the teacher they never forgot. Alongside teaching, he coached basketball, girls' soccer, and softball, continuing to coach even after he officially retired.
Basketball was a lifelong passion for Harry. He played in the local Monday night men's league well into his 70s. Golf was another love — both playing and working part-time at Rancocas Golf Club as a course ranger and ambassador for over 20 years. He was also a diehard Philly sports fan, faithfully rooting for the Phillies, Eagles, and Sixers through thick and thin.
Harry was a proud inductee of the South Jersey Basketball Hall of Fame, along with Riverside High School Sports Hall of Fame and a strong supporter of its events. He was also a long-time member of the Edgewater Park Sports Club and a regular at the weekly "breakfast club" and Ott's, where he'd catch up with friends and cheer on his teams.
But more than anything, Harry loved his family — especially his grandchildren. Whether it was watching their games, hitting the boardwalk for ice cream, traveling to Disney World, or exploring National Parks like Yellowstone and the Grand Canyon, those were his happiest moments.
Harry was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 48 years, Lynne Johnstone (née Whiting). He is survived by his children Jeff Johnstone (Diane Pruitt), Chris Johnstone, and Lauren Serano (Stephen Serano); and his treasured grandchildren, Lucas and Natalie Serano. He is also survived by his cousins Rick and Debbie Metz and many lifelong friends who were like family to him.
A viewing will be held on Thursday, October 2, 2025, from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM at the WEBER FUNERL HOME, 112 Broad Street, Riverton, NJ 08077. Burial at Lakeview Memorial Park, Cinnaminson, will be private.
