Obituary

Henry "Hank" Spalding, a 62-year resident of Palmyra, NJ passed away on May 23. Across 93 years, Hank never lost his passion to live life to the fullest. His life's ambition was to leave you laughing.

Born to John Spalding and Catherine Lautenbach, Henry had two brothers, Jackie and Roy, and one sister, June. While they grew up in Philadelphia, the family would ultimately make their home in Delair, NJ.

Henry joined the Army in 1948 and served in the Military Police during the occupation of Germany. He once participated in the retrieval of art stolen from Jewish victims of the Holocaust hidden in the cellar of Hermann Goring's home.

Henry's military service strengthened his deep roots of patriotism that lasted his lifetime. July 4th was always his favorite American holiday, reflecting his strong appreciation of our veterans. You could often find him visiting gravesites of fallen friends or replacing a tattered flag about town. In 2019, he was thrilled to be chosen as a special guest on the Honor Flight to Washington, DC, exclusively for military veterans.

Hank retired from Cumberland Farms as a facilities manager but continued with his part-time job at Roger Wilco for a total of 65 years. As the ambassador of beverage central, Hank made hundreds of friends and became a beloved figure at the Pennsauken store.

Hank will forever be remembered for his devotion to family and friends. Among his favorite activities was time spent at the local pub with his pals and a pint. You were never a stranger or forgotten person if Hank Spalding met you. Hank's thoughtfulness had no end.

Exceedingly witty, quick with a laugh, crafter, painter, and general tinkerer, Hank became a town legend after local news covered the large-scale, miniature replica he created of his hometown. In addition to his artsy side and twinkling blue eyes, Hank was known as a smooth as silk dance partner and a shameless charmer of women.

In 1991, Hank was predeceased by his wife, Claire Trask, leaving family and dear friends among the fans who happily validated his life and did not want the party to end.

As the last of the greatest generation takes their leave, Hank's message was simple: Be there for one another. The Hank effect will live on in all those he connected to so easily and left smiling.
