Obituary

John Edward Gilmore (Ed) of Riverton, NJ, passed away peacefully in his home on Saturday, March 9, 2024. He was 93 years old.

Ed was born on September 19, 1930 in Bridgeton, NJ and when he was 10 months old, his family settled in Palmyra, NJ. He found his forever home in Riverton, NJ.  He is preceded in death by his parents Alfred and Nellie (née LaMar) Gilmore, brother Reverend Robert LaMar Gilmore, and his wife of 43 years, Joan (née DeCoursey).

Ed graduated from Palmyra High School in 1949 where he played varsity basketball. In 1951 he received a degree in accounting from Peirce Business School. Shortly after graduation, he was drafted into the U.S. Army where he spent 15 months in Korea, reaching the rank of Sergeant at his discharge. Upon his return home, he put his accounting degree to work in various roles from plant accountant, to cost accountant, to corporate controller and then ultimately becoming President of Eagle Dye in Mt. Holly, NJ.

Ed was a long-time member (over 70 years) of Calvary Presbyterian Church in Riverton where he served in various volunteer roles. His civic involvement led him to Riverton Borough Council, Chairman of the Riverton Fourth of July Committee, Historical Society of Riverton board member, and seven years as Riverton School board member during which time he helped oversee the building addition in 1974. He also served on the Burlington County YMCA board and was a member of the local Lions and Rotary Clubs. In 2021 Ed was honored as Riverton's Fourth of July Parade Marshal. This lists just a few civic projects Ed participated in for the greater community.

Ed is survived by his wife, Gerri Gilmore, of 25 years; his sons Ned (Lori) and Drew (Jean) Gilmore and daughter Melissa (Brian) Hill; grandchildren Colin, Aeryn, Lauren, Amanda, Ciara and Ethan.

Ed is also survived by his step children David, Diane, Barry, Brett and Brian; step grandchildren Dana, David, Darra, Alden, Kayla, Shannon, Brandon, Hannah and Zoey as well as step great-grandchildren Emily, Colton, Penelope and Georgia.

Services are scheduled on Saturday, March 23, 2024 at Calvary Presbyterian Church, 300 Fourth Street, Riverton, NJ. Visitation with the family begins at 10:00 a.m. Service at 11:00 a.m.
