John "Jack"
Roy Horton
Jan 25, 1940 — Jan 2, 2026
Jack passed away peacefully on Friday, January 2, 2026, in hospice care from an acute complication of Parkinson's Syndrome, a diagnosis he lived with for ten years. Jack was born in Pennsauken, NJ, an only child of Roy and Kathryn Horton (nee Stewart). He lived most of his life in NJ, with exception of a year in Lake Charles, Louisianna where his Dad was working. Jack attended and graduated from Moorestown High School in 1957 and immediately enlisted in the US Navy and served on the USS Intrepid. Once in civilian life, he attended Burlington County College and Cabrini College, earning a Bachelor of Business Administration.
While in the Navy, Jack spent many months in the Mediterranean Sea, working in the Communications Room of the Intrepid. This was the source of many stories and led to many tours of the ship so that he could pass on those stories of how he learned to whistle and wiggle his ears, and how he came to appreciate the fragility of life as he saw failed landings and takeoffs. This experience profoundly impacted his thinking, his faith, and his values.
After the Navy, Jack married and had four children, Lisa Ann, Kimberly Kay, John Roy Jr, and Heather Jean. He was a kind and compassionate father who insisted on 'dignity and decorum' at all times, introduced his family to the Lutheran faith, and celebrated all their successes while offering perspective on challenges. Throughout his life, Jack and his kids remained close, and a tribute to the values he instilled, his adult children cared for him in his later years as his body was increasingly challenged by Parkinson's.
Jack applied his leadership skills to several companies after enlistment, including RCA, GTE, Okidata, and Goodwill Industries. Jack did not let work interfere with his late-in-life passion for ballroom and Latin dancing, watching the Eagles and Phillies, and of course, Army vs. Navy games. Despite always living in the Philadelphia region, he somehow claimed the Oakland A's as his favorite team. Brief forages into singing in a community choir and playing the violin in a local garage band were fun experiments. Throughout his life, Jack held leadership positions in the Lutheran churches he belonged to. President of the congregation and church council are just a couple of his positions. He loved leading teams to function efficiently, and he cared deeply about every person with whom he worked or volunteered.
Jack was a committed and compassionate father, stern at times, but always teaching, forgiving and praying. He is missed dearly by his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. And of course, Quincy, his fur baby who was always lying nearby.
