Obituary

Kenneth C. Hughes, Sr., age 81, of Palmyra, NJ passed peacefully at home on September 8, 2024.

Ken was born on July 22, 1943 to Ethel Mae (nee Borton) and George E. Hughes and grew up in Riverton, NJ. Ken began his career in law enforcement in 1970 when joined the Riverton Police Department as a part-time Special Officer, then in 1972 he became a full-time Patrolman. In 1979 he was sworn in as the Department's Sergeant and would become Chief of Police in 1998, serving until his retirement in 2000. Chief Hughes proudly served the residents of the Borough of Riverton for his entire 30-year career. Additionally, Ken was a volunteer firefighter and Life Member with the Riverton Fire Company, Station 24, where he served as the 14th Fire Chief for 2 years, in 1971 and 1972, and was very active during the 1960's and 70's.

Kenny was a member of the P.B.A., Local 37, Burlington County from 1972 to present, a Life Member of the Burlington County Association Chiefs of Police, retired member of the South Jersey Police Chiefs Association, and a member of Local 10 Burlington County Retired Police and Firemen.

Together with his beloved wife of 54 years, Joanne B. Hughes (nee Hart), they settled in Palmyra, NJ where they raised their family. They enjoyed spending their summers at the Driftwood Campground near Sea Isle, NJ, where they made many lifelong friends. Ken loved to go fishing and crabbing, spending many days on his boat. He was also known for his annual vegetable gardens which he continued to plant and nurture each year. Joanne and Ken would regularly host family and friends at their home, especially enjoying their annual open house on Christmas Eve.

Ken was predeceased by his parents, George E. and Ethel Mae Hughes, by his brother, Edward Hughes, his sister, Jean Galland, and his beloved wife, Joanne B. Hughes. He is survived by his loving children, Kenneth C. Hughes, Jr. and his wife, Desiree J., and Theresa C. McGrane and her husband Joseph J. McGrane. Ken is also survived by his dear grandchildren, Melissa L. Carber and her husband James E., Kenneth C. Hughes, III, Christopher E. Hughes and Caitlyn J. Hughes, along with his loving great-grandchildren, McKenna , Caleb, Callen, McKinley and McKelti Carber, who all brought him great joy. Family, friends and colleagues are invited to attend his viewing on Saturday, September 14, 2024 from 9:00 AM to 11:00 AM, followed by his Funeral Service at 11:00 AM, all at the Weber Funeral Home, 112 Broad Street, Riverton, NJ 08077 (856-829-2700). Burial will then follow at Lakeview Memorial Park, Cinnaminson, NJ.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in his memory to the Riverton Police Association, 501 Fifth St., Riverton, NJ 08077, to continue to support their work in the community he loved and served, would be appreciated.
