Obituary

Mary J. Salzmann, age 79, longtime Palmyra, NJ resident passed peacefully on April 2, 2024

Mary was born and raised in Philadelphia, PA to the late Mary and John Salzmann, the oldest of five girls. She was a graduate of Little Flower Catholic High School, class of 1962, and received her bachelor's degree in education from Chestnut Hill College before going on to obtain her master's degree from Glassboro State College (Rowan University).

Mary spent her 40-year career in Public Education with the Camden City School District, specializing in History and Reading, at Yorkship, Cramer and McGraw Family Schools. Mary loved her students and was very proactive in helping "her kids" excel beyond the regular school curriculum, teaching them many life skills. Mary enjoyed writing Haiku and teaching her students how to do the same. She remained in touch with many of her students long after their time in her classroom.

Mary was very artistic and loved crocheting, then she would donate most items she made to local charities and hospitals. She enjoyed traveling and once spent a full summer touring all of Europe. Mary enjoyed crabbing, a good bottle of wine, and was an excellent cook; she would host many holiday dinners at her home for her family. Mary, along with her friend Arlene, ran a catering business for several years.

Mary cared deeply for her family and always looked out for them as best she could. She cared for her parents for many years and had them live with her. Strong-willed and independent, Mary will be greatly missed.

Mary was predeceased by her parents, Mary (nee' McKeefry) and John J. Salzmann, her sister, Joan Salzmann and her niece, Mary Mroz. She is survived by her dear sisters, Susan Zacniewski, Anne Canning and her husband Raymond, and Rita Salzmann. Also surviving are her nephew, Brian Canning (Jennifer), as well as her great nieces and nephew, Hannah Bickert, Jackson Canning and Emilie Anne Canning. She is also survived by her dear cousin, Reverend George Salzmann, OSFS.
