Nora McHugh Martin, age 97, of Riverton, NJ, died peacefully on November 27, 2018, at the Masonic Nursing Home in Burlington, NJ. She was the much-beloved mother of six children, grandmother to three, and great-grandmother to one. Known for her kindness, generosity, and humor, Mrs. Martin was the widow of Richard J. Martin, a career FBI agent. Together they lived in San Juan, Puerto Rico; Arlington, VA; Dearborn, MI; Pittsburg, PA, and Riverside, NJ, before settling in Riverton 60 years ago.
Mrs. Martin was born September 11, 1921, in Riverside, to John ("Pat") McHugh and Frances Woodington McHugh, but grew up in Burlington, where she attended public schools. She was a stand-out student at Burlington City High School, where she was class president, captain of the basketball team, played tennis and field hockey, and was voted most likely to succeed. For decades, until she was the last survivor, she organized reunions of the Class of 1939.
After high school, she attended business school and worked for Burlington City Loan and Trust Co., a job she loved. Later in life, she became a laboratory tester for National Casein in Riverton where she made wonderful friends.
Mrs. Martin is survived by; her children, Eileen, Patricia (Larry), Joan (Joseph), Mary (Peter), Ann, and Richard (Julie) Martin; as well as grandchildren, Martin McDevitt, Clare Sevcik, and Rose Barinelli; and great-grandson, Jonathan Barinelli. She was also predeceased by her sister, Eleanor McHugh.
Mrs. Martin was a long-time member of Sacred Heart Parish in Riverton, where many of her children attended school. She was an active member of PTAs at Sacred Heart and Holy Cross High School in Delran.
In later life, she traveled a good deal to satisfy her intense curiosity, taking courses at colleges all over America, but her most frequent trips were to visit her children and grandchildren, even at age 92. When travel became daunting, she continued to be an inveterate reader and kept abreast of current events.
Mrs. Martin loved Riverton, nature, swimming, reading, and had a wonderful sense of humor. But It is her boundless kindness that will be most badly missed. No one was ever a stranger in her home.
A graveside service will be held in Riverside in the spring. Condolences and remembrances may be shared with her family at www.weberfuneralhomeinc.com Arrangements by the Weber Funeral Home, 112 Broad Street, Riverton, NJ 08077 (856-829-2700)
