Obituary

SHAMONG, N.J. - Roberta Helen Fitzgerald, 76,died peacefully on October 17, 2022 with her family by her side.  Roberta was born September 27, 1946 in Orange, N.J., the daughter of Thomas E. and Bertha (Washburn) Fitzgerald; granddaughter of Fred and Hattie Washburn and William and Helen Fitzgerald.

Roberta grew up in Bloomfield, N.J. and was a proud member of Bloomfield Senior High School class of 1964.  She was active in school as a member of the Drill Team.  She was a graduate of Bloomfield College and earned her Masters Degree from Rowan College (formerly Glassboro State College), and had a long, fulfilling career as an administrator for Rowan where she developed long-time relationships with students and faculty members.  Her joy was in seeing young people develop and go on to do great things in their career choices.  Roberta was gifted with many talents including computer expertise, sewing and quilting, as well as knitting and crocheting.  She was an excellent writer and documented many life experiences to paper, then compiled these and the writings of her siblings, aunts and uncles to notebooks entitled "Fitzgerald Memories" and "Washburn Memories."  Roberta was generous with her time and talents.  She orchestrated the 50th high school reunion for the class of 1964, via her computer skills, to gather a record number of alumni for this event in 2014. She was the "go to" person for any techno questions.  Since 2012, Roberta knit a total of 1430 hats for infants and children to be distributed, anonymously, via the Guilford Maine Grange to those in need throughout Piscataquis County, Maine.  Her final 330 hats were delivered in August of this year.

Maine was Roberta's absolute favorite place to be.  She adored her cottage, "camp," on the shores of Sebec Lake in Dover-Foxcroft.  She enjoyed her final summer at camp in August of this year.  Roberta's hand-crocheted afghans adorn every cozy chair at camp and will supply her beloved family with warmth and remembrance of her for years to come.

Roberta was predeceased by her parents, grandparents and brothers-in-law David Kinsey Groel and Michael Tucker.  She is survived by her devoted husband, Don Catts, and her daughters Kari (Larry) Schoch, Emily Schmelz and two very special grandchildren, Rachelle and Riley Schoch who were their grandmother's pride and joy.  She is also survived by her sisters Peggy (Sam) Hon, Ginger Fitzgerald and Cathy Tucker. Her step children Margaret Jordan, Donald Catts Jr and Barbara Przybycien.

A memorial service will be held Sunday, November 6, 2022, 11:00 a.m. at the Weber Funeral Home, 112 Broad Street, Riverton , N.J. 08077.  A service in Dover-Foxcroft, Maine will be held during the summer of 2023.  Donations in Roberta's memory may be made to the Fred and Hattie Washburn Scholarship Fund, Foxcroft Academy,  Attn: Cathy Hall, 975 West Main Street, Dover-Foxcroft, Maine  04426 .
