Obituary

Sledge H. Smith, Jr. passed away peacefully on July 27th, 2023, he was 90.

Sledge was born Jan. 17, 1933 in San Antonio, TX to the late Sledge H. Smith, Sr. and Ora Lee (nee Allen) Smith.  In 1950, Sledge enlisted in the U.S. Navy, enabling him to escape poverty and the harsh realities of segregation in the Jim Crow South of Texas and served as a Navy Corpsman on a Naval vessel during the Korean War and was honorably discharged.

Following his service, Sledge put himself through night school at Pace University in New York, NY.  He then went on to work for 27 years as a management information system administrative executive for Peat Marwick, an accounting firm, known today as KPMG.  He was the rare white collar Black professional serving in his function for Peat Marwick's in-house Management Consulting (MC) practice, at the dawn of MC ultimately spinning out to mature into its own industry.

Sledge was most recently a resident of Riverview Estates in Riverton, NJ where he was cherished for his humor, friendship and leadership. He was an avid walker with a tremendous love for chess, becoming both a strong player and teacher of the game, who enjoyed sharing it to form bonds with others in the Riverview community.

Sledge was pre-deceased by his parents and sister, Joy Simmons, and his wife, Mary (nee Milanes) Smith.  He is survived by his son Sledge H. Smith, III, daughter Cynthia Snowden, grandchildren Sean Snowden, Jr. and Brianna Snowden.

Services for Sledge will be held in private.

Arrangements by the Weber Funeral Home, 112 Broad Street, Riverton, NJ 08077
