Obituary

The Reverend Canon Dr. Alan Kent Salmon, age 86, of Delran, NJ peacefully departed this life on August 1, 2024.

Born on April 15, 1938 to Marie D. (nee Cameron) and Walter W. Salmon, he was raised in Moorestown, NJ and was a graduate of Moorestown High School, Class of 1956. Alan's education continued at Trinity College, Hartford, CT where he was a member of Phi Beta Kappa, earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in 1960 and continued there to earn his Master of Arts degree in 1961. He went on to attend the General Theological Seminary of the Episcopal Church, New York, NY, earning his Master of Divinity in 1964 and later attended Drew University, Madison, NJ where he earned his Doctorate of Ministry in 1989.

Alan was ordained to the Diaconate on April 25, 1964 and subsequently ordained to the Priesthood in the Episcopal Diocese of New Jersey on October 31, 1964 at Trinity Cathedral in Trenton, NJ. Following his Ordination to the Priesthood, Father Salmon served as Curate at Trinity Church, Cranford, NJ from 1964 to 1966 and then became Vicar at St. Peter's Episcopal Church in Woodbury Heights, NJ from 1966 to 1970, when the church merged to form Holy Trinity in Wenonah, NJ.

Father Salmon was then named Rector of Christ Episcopal Church in Riverton, NJ where he faithfully served for thirty-three years, from 1970 through 2003, until his retirement. Following his retirement, Father Salmon continued to serve as a long-term supply priest throughout the Episcopal Diocese of New Jersey at many churches including St. Mary's, Burlington, where he was also an active member since 2003, St. Stephen's, Mullica Hill, St. Peter's, Medford, St. John's, Chews Landing, St. George's, Pennsville, St. John's, Salem and Trinity Church, Swedesboro.

Throughout his service to the Episcopal Church and The Diocese of New Jersey, Father Salmon held many positions including Honorary Canon, Trinity Cathedral, Trenton, NJ, Honorary Associate, Christ Church, Bordentown, NJ, Dean of the Burlington Convocation (1978-1981) and served on the Diocesan Foundation, Cathedral Chapter, Benefits Committee, Episcopal Election Committee, as Chair of the Board of Missions and Chair of the Diocesan Nominating Committee. Additionally, he served as Chaplain for the Burlington Convocation of Retirees (2014 to present) and, in service to his community, he was the Chaplain for the Riverton Police Department and Riverton Fire Department from 1973 through 2003. In recognition of his long service to the Riverton Community, Father Salmon was honored as the Grand Marshall of the annual Riverton 4th of July Children's Parade prior to his retirement.

Father Salmon was predeceased by his parents, Walter W. Salmon and Marie D. Salmon (nee Cameron), as well as by his brother, Walter W. Salmon, Jr. He is survived by many dear friends, parishioners and fellow members of the Episcopal Clergy.

A viewing will be held on Saturday, August 10, 2024 from 9:30 AM to 10:45 AM in Old St. Mary's Episcopal Church, located at the corner of W. Broad Street and Wood Street, Burlington, NJ 08016 with the Burial Office and Requiem Mass to be celebrated at 11:00 AM in the adjacent New St. Mary's Episcopal Church, 125 W. Broad Street, Burlington, NJ 08016. The Committal and Interment will follow in St. Mary's Churchyard.
