Obituary

Thomas A. Cairns, Jr., age 100, longtime resident of Riverton, NJ, passed peacefully May 20, 2026, surrounded by his family.

Tom was born in Philadelphia, PA in 1925 to Kathryn and Thomas A. Cairns, Sr., growing up in Drexel Hill, PA before settling in Riverton, NJ and later Cinnaminson, NJ.

Following high school, Tom proudly served his country during World War II as a member of the U.S. Merchant Marines. Following the war, he attended St. Joseph's University graduating in the Class of 1951. Afterwards he proudly served his country again during the Korean War as a member of the U.S. Army.

Upon completing his military service Tom began his career in the automotive industry working for Ford Motor Company. Tom stayed with Ford for many years, eventually becoming the owner/operator of his own dealership, the Sullivan-Cairns Ford located in Glassboro, NJ. After successfully operating the dealership, he went on to work for The Tokheim Gas Pump Company for several years until his retirement. Tom didn't stay retired very long before beginning another career as a Real Estate Agent working for 20 years with Lamon Associates Real Estate.

Together with his beloved wife, Marie "Mimi" Cairns, they were active parishioners of Sacred Heart Church, Riverton, NJ and served as Eucharistic Ministers along with volunteering their time for many activities at the church.

Tom was predeceased by his beloved wife of 61-years, Marie "Mimi" Cairns (nee' Weeks), in 2019. He is the loving father of Tom Cairns III and wife Colleen, Suzanne Cairns Wells, John Cairns and wife Pam, and Barbara Shea and husband Dan. Also surviving are his dear grandchildren, Rose, Tommy and Grace Cairns, Camille and Reed Wells, Michael and Katie Cairns, Caroline Shea, Kathryn Castro (Danny), Nina and Dan Shea, along with great-grandson, Nico Castro. Tom is also survived by many special nieces, nephews and extended family members as well as his devoted caregiver, Lilliana Silva.

Additionally, Tom was predeceased by his brother Jack Cairns and sisters Peggie Tomeo and Joan Crimmins.

Relatives, friends and fellow veterans are invited to attend a visitation with his family on Friday, May 29, 2026 from 9:15 AM to 10:45 AM followed by his Funeral Mass at 11:00 AM all at the Sacred Heart Church, 4th Street & Linden Avenue, Riverton, NJ 08077. A Eulogy will be given prior to the start of Mass. A luncheon reception will be held following Mass.

Interment with Military Honors at the BGWCD New Jersey Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Provinceline Road, Arneytown, NJ will be held privately on another date.
