William "Bill"
A. Hall
Aug 2, 1924 — Mar 24, 2026
William A. Hall, "Bill," age 101, of Riverton, NJ, passed peacefully at his home on March 24, 2026.
Born in 1924 to Kathryn and George Hall, Bill grew up in Palmyra and Riverton and remained a lifelong resident of the community he loved. He graduated from Rutgers University with a bachelor's degree in education and later earned his master's degree from Glassboro State College (now Rowan University). Bill dedicated 35 years to teaching fourth and fifth grades in the Moorestown, NJ school system before retiring. Following his retirement, he continued to share his love of education by assisting at the Hobby Horse Nursery School, which his wife Nancy operated from their home in Riverton from 1961 to 2006.
Bill had a deep love for sailing and met his future wife, Nancy Ritschard, at the Riverton Yacht Club. Together, they were lifelong members and actively served the club in numerous roles over the years. Bill especially enjoyed teaching others how to sail. He was also an avid cyclist, often riding his bicycle to and from work in Moorestown and embarking on long-distance rides and weekend trips with friends. His passion for local history led him to research Riverton's historic bicycle track and help commemorate its location with a plaque and garden at Broad and Lippincott Streets.
A devoted family man and community member, Bill coached his son's Pal-Riv League baseball and soccer teams and volunteered with Indian Guides and the Boy Scouts. He was a constant and enthusiastic presence at all of his children's events. Bill and Nancy shared a love of square dancing, camping, hiking, and the outdoors, and they instilled that same appreciation in their children through many adventures across the United States and Switzerland.
Bill was deeply committed to serving his community. He was a longtime member of the Riverton Board of Education and the Riverton Borough Council. In recognition of his many contributions, he was honored to serve as Parade Marshal of the 2024 Riverton 4th of July Children's Parade, having previously served as Co-Marshal with Nancy in 2006. Bill and Nancy were former members of Westfield Friends Meeting in Cinnaminson and longtime members of Calvary Presbyterian Church in Riverton.
Together, Bill and Nancy played a significant role in supporting UrbanPromise, a Christian-based organization in Camden, NJ. They volunteered extensively and were honored with the establishment of the Bill & Nancy Hall Scholarship Fund, which supports educational opportunities for local youth.
Bill and Nancy were also instrumental in introducing the Bernese Mountain Dog breed to the United States when they brought their first dog from Switzerland in 1963, helped found the Bernese Mountain Dog Club of America, and raised many litters that spread this beautiful breed throughout the US.
Bill was predeceased by his beloved wife of 72 years, Anne "Nancy" Ritschard Hall, in 2024. He is survived by his loving children: Betsy Xanthis and her husband John of Goshen, NY; Marge Hall and her husband Jeffrey Schmidt of Cinnaminson, NJ; and John Hall and his wife Susan of Narragansett, RI. He is also survived by his cherished grandchildren, Kate, Libby, Erin, Christopher, John, Annie, and Jack, as well as his 15 great-grandchildren: Kelly, Michael, Jake, Ella, Charlotte, Thomas, Dylan, Molly, Grace, Hudson, Luke, Christian, Jackson, Nicholas, and Vivienne. He is further survived by his brother-in-law, John Ritschard of Estes Park, CO, along with many nieces, nephews, dear friends, and neighbors. In addition to his wife, Bill was predeceased by his sister, Patricia Smith, and his brother, George Hall.
Family and friends are invited to visit on April 16, 2026, from 10:15 AM to 11:00 AM, followed by a funeral service at 11:00 AM, all at Calvary Presbyterian Church, 4th Street and Lippincott Avenue, Riverton, NJ 08077.
