Obituary

William Cumpston Probsting, 77, passed away at his home in Riverton on Monday, September 20, 2021. Many family members and friends were at his bedside when he expired.

Bill was a life-long resident of Riverton, living in the house on Howard Street that has been in his family for three generations. He lived a life of service, friendship, loyalty and love. He was a voracious reader and inspired others in the joy of reading. Family and friends alike knew him as a patient, caring, spirited and sometimes mischievous man.

Bill Probsting was headmaster of Westfield Friends School from 1974 to 2013. During his tenure at Westfield the school grew in numbers, upgraded its facilities, and broadened and enriched its K-8 curriculum. After his retirement from Westfield,  Bill continued to serve his community through membership on the board of the Burlington County Action Partnership, which for a period he chaired, on the board of the Riverton Historical Society, and through involvement with other non-profit organizations in the area.

His legacy lives in the hundreds children he nurtured and educated, the family and friends who loved him, and the community he served with selfless devotion.

Bill Probsting was predeceased by his mother, Lenore Showell Probsting, and his father, Gustav Henry Probsting. He is survived by two sisters, Trudy O'Toole of Santa Fe, New Mexico, and Louise Toal of Woodbury Heights, New Jersey, and by several cousins, nieces and nephews, and grandnieces and nephews. His family has begun planning a gathering to celebrate Bill's life during the July 4 th holiday, 2022.

Donations in his honor can be made to the Riverton Historical Society ( www.rivertonhistory.com ) and to Westfield Friends School ( www.westfieldfriends.org ) for the scholarship in his name that has been established there.
